How to Verify a CNC Supplier's Quality Before Your First Order
Placing your first order with a new CNC supplier always feels like a gamble. You've seen their website, you've exchanged emails, and the quote looks reasonable. But what happens after you send payment?

1. Tooling Management: The First Sign of Discipline
Walk into any CNC workshop and look at the tooling area. Are cutting tools stored in labeled racks, or piled in a cardboard box? Are worn tools separated from new ones?
A shop that can't organize its tools almost certainly can't hold tight tolerances. Tooling discipline is the foundation of machining precision. If the tooling area is chaos, walk away.
2. Calibration Records: The Paper Trail That Matters
Every measuring instrument — calipers, micrometers, CMMs — needs regular calibration. Ask to see the calibration log. If they can't produce one, or if the dates are expired, you're betting your order on unverified measurements.

3. The Scrap Area: What Their Waste Tells You
This is the most honest part of any factory. A well-managed scrap area tells you three things:
- What materials they struggle with
- What defect types are most common
- Whether they separate recyclable materials properly
A messy scrap area with mixed materials and unidentified rejects? That's a red flag. A clean, sorted scrap area with labeled bins? That's a shop that takes quality seriously.
